Feeling homesick at university

Feeling homesick at university
You can be happy to be at university and still miss home. A familiar voice, the way someone makes dinner or the ordinary comfort of knowing where everything belongs can suddenly feel a long way away. Homesickness can arrive at the start of term, after a visit home or on a day when you weren’t expecting it.
It doesn’t mean you made the wrong choice. You’re adjusting to a different place and a different rhythm, and that can take time. You can make room for what you miss while gradually finding things that feel familiar here too.
Name what you’re missing
“Home” can mean different things. You might miss a person, a language, a pet, a neighbourhood or simply feeling known without having to introduce yourself. Understanding a little more about the feeling can help you decide what might be comforting.
If you miss company over dinner, a call or a meal with someone could help. If you miss familiar food, look for ingredients or a recipe you can make with the equipment available.
Keep in touch in a way that helps
You don’t need to limit contacting home to settle into university. Try finding a pattern that fits your life and the people you’re speaking to, especially if you’re working around time differences.
Keep in touch with people from home in a way that works for you. That might be a regular call, the odd voice note or simply catching up when you feel like it. There’s no right amount of contact, so find a balance that helps you feel connected while still giving yourself space to settle into university life.
If home is complicated or isn’t somewhere you can turn for comfort, choose another trusted person or a university support service. Your experience deserves care.
Bring a little familiarity into your room
A photograph, a warm hoodie or a favourite playlist can help a new room feel less temporary. Start with something you already have rather than feeling you need to buy your way into feeling settled.
Make one practical corner work well for you, whether that’s where you make breakfast or where you sit at the end of the day. If you live in a studio, your room can be a comfortable base while you build connections elsewhere. If you share a flat, you can still take quiet time to yourself.
Build a few local points of familiarity
Choose an easy route to university, find somewhere useful to buy food and get to know one place you like spending time. Repeating a few ordinary activities can make the area feel more familiar.
You might try a regular society session or sit in the same part of the library. Keep the first step manageable. You don’t need a full social calendar to begin putting down a few roots.
Tell someone how things feel
Homesickness can become more isolating when you feel you have to hide it. A trusted person may understand more than you expect, and you can tell them what would help: a chat, some company or a simple plan for the next day.
Your Student Castle team can listen and signpost you towards support. You can also use the Student Assist app, asking the team for access information if you need it. There’s no requirement to wait until you feel worse before reaching out.
Be careful with comparisons
Photos and group chats can make it seem as though everyone else has settled instantly. You’re seeing selected moments, not the whole of someone’s day. Another student can enjoy an event and still miss home afterwards.
Give yourself room to have mixed feelings. A good afternoon doesn’t cancel a difficult evening, and a difficult evening doesn’t mean you’re making no progress. Try looking for small changes over time rather than expecting a sudden moment when everything feels different.
Get more support if you need it
Student Minds has guidance on homesickness, and your university wellbeing service can help you talk through how it is affecting you. If difficulties persist or affect sleep, eating, study or daily life, contact your university support service or GP.
You can miss where you came from and still make a home here. Let those feelings sit together while you take the next small step towards a day that feels more familiar.
